Help the Homeless Walkathon

Each year, Fannie Mae sponsors the Help the Homeless Program to help raise awareness and funds for organizations working to prevent and end homelessness. WFCM depends on churches, schools and businesses to partner with us to meet our financial needs through the Help the Homeless Walks.

Did you know that there are over 1,500 homeless people in Fairfax County? In addition to the homeless, there are over 56,000 people living beneath the poverty level who struggle daily just to make ends meet so they won't lose their homes and so they can feed their families. Our goal is to serve our neighbors in need with food, clothes and financial assistance, and we need your help to provide for these individuals and families in our community.

How can you Help? You can sponsor your own walk for your school, business or church; join us for the Annual WFCM Walk to "Help the Homeless Walk" or sponsor a student who can't afford the registration costs to participate in their own school walk. The walks are held in the autumn. In 2012, they concluded in early November. We held six walks and everyone who participated received a walk t-shirt. Between those walks, we raised $6,745.

Participating in a "Help the Homeless Walk" is a good community outreach event! It can provide several benefits including but not limited to:
  • Becoming more aware of homelessness, hunger and poverty in our community and ways to help meet others' needs.
  • Provides an opportunity to help us provide life-essential needs to our neighbors in need.
